AfW External Backup v2.98d (beta) (updated 1 February 2013)
An external backup procedure for AfW that saves the data files in compressed form to floppy disk. Most libraries will require just two floppy disks.
Version 2.98 supports backup to HUGE media such as CD-RW with packet writing. Each day's backups are written to a BACKUP named as the date and time e.g. 20020830-134356.zip.
Backups are not overwritten but accumulate.
This allows for ALL backups ever made to be kept.
Version 2.98c has better checking to ensure
that files are not skipped over during backup if Alice is still open.
Version 2.98d (beta) will run on Windows 7
(64 bit). The 16 bit components ASK.EXE. WAIT.EXE, VDATE.EXE and CANCOPY.EXE
have all been updated to 32 bit executables to allow correct operation on workstations
running Windows 7 (64 bit).

SIRCAM virus/worm - Restore ability to run .EXE files
The SIRCAM email virus/worm redefines the association for running a .EXE file to chain through itself. When the virus program is removed by a virus checker it is possible that the appropriate Registry entries are not corrected. Every time you try to run a program you will receive an error message saying that the program cannot be run. To correct this problem, download and execute this registry patch file.
Further information about the SIRCAM virus/worm can be found at these sites:
The SOE (Standard Operating Environment) files for Alice for Windows, install a standard set of parameters to save you having to do this yourself. The following items are installed: standard operators (incl web inq operator), groups, areas, level, country, reason, recommendation, user defined fields for borrowers and ltag.d.

UPDATE: Use this for a conversion from OASIS. Includes LLUCODES.D which contains most lookup tables.
NEW: Use this for an update from a prior version of Alice for Windows. It does NOT overwrite the LLUCODES.D file as this would remove the lookup entries for Roll Class.
Warning: These files are version specific. Only use the correct file for your version of AfW.
A small number of libraries have experienced AfW persistently crashing when Inquiry, Cataloguing or Periodicals is selected. No CDB error is displayed, just a very long list of filenames in a 'Files Remain Open' window.
Almost invariably the cause of these crashes is corrupted records in the AfW data files. The CHECKDB tool finds most standard file corruptions, but does not identify the presence of records that were entirely blank in the original OASIS system before upgrade to AfW. Blank records in OASIS files typically occur when a recovery from backup says 'Add error in recovery' and this is ignored. OASIS ignores these blank records, AfW is not so forgiving. During conversion, blank records which contain the field BRNO, are converted to contain the invalid BRLK '1000000'. It is the presence of this invalid BRLK that causes AFW to crash.
This utility will scan all AfW library files in the LOASIS directory and delete any records with a BRLK of 1000000.
To use:
The file AFWFIX.LST contains a list of all changes made.
OASIS Finance Purchase & Payments without Sales Tax Declaration

External Backup doesn't write to floppy disk
An error in the AfW External Backup procedures supplied by OASIS Extras to many ACT schools during 1999, will cause the backup to NOT be written to floppy disk If the floppy disk light lights only briefly after the first long list of files being compressed, you will need to apply this patch. A compressed copy of the AfW data files is still stored to the fileserver and could be used to recover in an emergency.
To fix the problem:
OASIS Admin Standard Reports (F4)
This version of F4 - Standard Reports overcomes the problems printing Absences reports and and Calendar reports for dates past 31/12/99
Download Year 2000 Compliant version HOASIS (Head Office Floppy) (466kb)
This version is year 2000 compliant. Dates are displayed with four digit years so there can be no ambiguity about what the date really is. All other versions of DBU that show only two digit years will most probably store a date of 1900 and you will not know! DBUZIP.EXE self extracting ZIP (249kb)
This utility (provided courtesy of Softlink) is invaluable for testing OASIS and Alice data files for corruption. I use it every time before starting an upgrade for OASIS to Alice to ensure that there are no booby traps waiting to spoil the conversion. It does occasionally complain about legitimate (but odd looking) data, so use your discretion before acting on its findings. Download CHECKDB.EXE here.
